21A - Reading Reflection No. 2

I chose to read the book Art of Social Media by Guy Kawasaki

1)    What was the general theme or argument of the book?
This book comprises of over 100 practical tips for using your social media presence as a business, while employing the bottom-up approach to get the attention of your brand, product, and/or business.

2)    How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
I thought Kawasaki did a great job connecting everyday tools like social media platforms to successful marketing tactics. Many entrepreneurs would love to not spend any additional money on marketing their product and Kawasaki walks you through how to successfully do that.

3)    If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
I think I would have the class create a fake social media post and then have it cross promote to another social media account as that is lesson number three in the book. This way people in the class can have practice creating social media content for marketing their product/service.

4)    What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?

I thought one aspect of the book really surprised me at first, but then it made sense to how well Kawasaki did advertise the Macintosh. He talked about how he was able to get the customers of Macintosh to almost do more marketing then he was. Everyone that was purchasing the computers were bragging to their friends and posting on their social media platforms.

    1. Hey Michael,

I also read Kawasaki's book. It's interesting to see all the same points we took from the book. I really like your assignment you would design based off the book. I think that would be a great way to teach students how to cross-promote. My assignment is basically the same concept but more towards customizing your own profile. I think Kawasaki teaches us a lot about marketing and I would definitely recommend this piece of work to anyone studying advertising or marketing. Great job Michael!

  2. Hi Michael,

The book you chose is a great book to read considering the importance of social media in todays society. Social media is one of the fastest ways tom make your word known. Basically everyone has a social media account and is usually active more than an hour each day one this account. With that being said, social media is a great way to network and meet new people. Learning the importance of social media during this time is essential to learning how to market a company or brand in my opinion. Overall, I really enjoyed your post.
